Name: Andy Hully
Name of race organisation: Milton Keynes Marathon
How old is it and how did it come about?
Back in 2010 I had the idea to organize a marathon in Milton Keynes in the Olympic year. I didn’t realise how much work it would be! The weather was awful the first year and we learnt a lot and especially to always plan for the worst. This year will be our 5th event and we have gone from strength to strength. So much so, that we have just been awarded the British Association of Road Races (BARR) Gold Status for outstanding race management.
What races do you organise?
Dirt Half Challenge – 12 November 2016
MK Rocket 5K – Sunday 1st May 2016
MK Half Marathon – Bank Holiday 2nd May 2016
MK Marathon – Bank Holiday 2nd May 2016
Marathon Relay – Bank Holiday 2nd May 2016
Superhero Fun Run – Bank Holiday 2nd May 2016
What do you personally get out of putting on races?
I consider myself a very organized individual and enjoy the planning and organizational side as well as the satisfaction of seeing the day come together after all of the hard work.
Are you yourself a runner?
I’ve been a runner for 10 years, but I’m just coming back after two knee operations during the last year.
What’s the most annoying question you get asked before a race?
When it gets close to race day we do get lots of emails and the answers are always on the website. Please check the FAQ page first!
Have you ever ran your own race?
No I haven’t, but I would like to run the Dirt Half
What do you think medals add to your races?
It’s a great achievement to run and race and runners deserve the best medal possible. We work hard to come up with a different design every year.
Why should people come and run your races?
Great atmosphere, impressive stadium venue, entertainment, scenic route which includes numerous beautiful lakes, picturesque parks and even the meandering grand union canal. And of course, as you would expect, the route takes in the famous Concrete Cows of Milton Keynes!
What’s your favourite medal from your own races?
The new MK Legend medal is my favourite but you need to run the MK Marathon 5 times (need not be consecutive) to get one!
Thank you very much Andy, we hope the knee is on the mend. The MK Legend medal is one of our favourites too but the shoe design from 2014 is the one we get asked the most about. We love any race organiser that embraces bonus medals for that extra challenge so we plan on signing up for this years (downhill) 5k and marathon soon. Gotta love a three medal weekend (four for those Legend runners, we have medal envy). We did vow after the half in 2015 that we would never go back but the new course looks like a vast vast vast improvement (might do a separate article soon about the new route on loveto.run). We can’t wait to try it.
You can find Milton Keynes Marathon on Facebook and Twitter and on their website of course. Price increases are on the 31st January so you might want to get in there soon. We’ve not done the Dirt Half but it does look pretty fun, see for yourself here.
