Medal, addicts, you are not alone. There are many of us. We don’t need to hide the metal in draws from shame. Display your medals with pride and you may even make the hall of fame.
I have 119 running medals from 7x marathons, 57x halfs, 1x 18miler, 4x 10 milers, 33x 10ks and other distances. Medal collection is actually 126 in total though as have 2x triathlons, 4x cycling sportives and 1x swimathon medal
Do you remember you first medal?
My first medal was the 1993 Newton Abbot 5k and then didn’t do another race or get another medal until I re-ran the race in 2010 and then the medal drive kicked in!
If your house was burning down which medal would you save?
Tough question as my medals are all on a magnetic board attached to the wall I wouldn’t have time to unscrew the board and make a runner with the board! Arrrghh. Would try and grab as many as possible. Some only are short distances but have great memories or are great designs but it would probably be one of the marathon medals so it’d have to be the Kent Roadrunner medal followed by last year’s London Marathon medal
Medal reveal or no reveal before the race?
Is this a joke question?!! 110% medal reveal before the race. They do this in all the big and best American races and a good percentage of the best races like the Rock n Roll series and the majors tend to reveal the bling pre-race day. It’s certainly made me sign up to races that I didn’t fancy or had decided the previous year was the last year. Its great to know that medal in the picture is yours, you just have to turn up and earn it. Races that don’t reveal it I’m always cautious of as quite often the medals hidden away as it’s not very enticing such as the was bupa/now Morrisons race series. Anything that gets you to the race start and pushes you to the end can only be a good thing. Unless its a local race done for charity I just think think if you’r going to give medals then make them good and go bespoke. White Star Running, Enigma Running and the Saxons, Vikings and Normans events are superb at previewing pre-race medals and making the best series for medals in UK and are my favourite races for many reasons.
Do you have a least favourite medal?
Least favourite would be one of the generic race medals you get from local races that don’t have any race info on like name, date, distance or ribbon or maybe a virtual race.
Sooo many medals still on the bucket list. Disney medals are on there at the top due to goofy challenge and also like the avengers and star wars events. The Texas marathon and Little Rock medals are huge and would love one of them one day. Boston, New York, Tokyo and Chicago are missing from my majors collection too. In the UK the Donegal 4 marathon challenege medal is an awesome showpiece to have. I should be getting the Loch Ness Marathon medal next month as that’s been on my bucket list a while. Lots more races and medals planned for next year!
Finally, in ten words or less, why do you love them?
I love them because…they are a memory and an achievement forever.
(That 11 words but we’ll forgive you). Thank you very much Martyn.
